DisplayPort
Over the past few years, the computer industry has seen a range of video connectors come and go
onto the market. From VGA, to DVI and then HDMI we've seen the quality improve from an analog signal to digital. We've also seen sound transmitted in tandem with the display signla as is the case with HDMI. Why are we looking to a new interface, DisplayPort?
Display Port was developed with the members of the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). This means that the interface was designed to be a robust IT solution. The physical aspect of it is similar to a USB or HDMI cable with smaller connectors. With the thin profile, it can be easily accomodated on netbooks, laptops and even tablet PC's.
It lets a larger amount of data through the cable, so allows for greater resolultions than dual-link DVI and HDMI connectors. It's important for futureproofing the connection. An auxillary channel also allows it to carry additional video or data information as well as a dedicated 8-channel uncompressed audio stream just like HDMI.
Many connections are available to convert it, and you can get DisplayPort to HDMI, DisplayPort to VGA and also DisplayPort to DVI. It's the future of monitor connections and while still relatively young, Display Port promises to be the future.
